Do You Remember Pay Phones?
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
On my birthday I received a funny text from a friend that asked if I remembered when we had to make sure we had a dime incase we had to use the pay phone.
Oh yes, I remembered, and yes I even remembered that it cost a dime to make a local call. I even remembered when they raised it to a quarter. But if you had to make an emergency call it was free! You would just pick up the receiver and dial zero, the telephone operator would answer and connect you. Yes we even had live telephone operators back then.
So today as I am reflecting on pay phones I ask the 8 year old little girl that I watch. “Do you have a cell phone”? “Yes” as a matter of fact she has two, a white one, and a purple one that her grandmother gave her. So I asked her if she knew what a pay phone was… “No”.
So there I was telling a story, giving a history lesson, and it started… “Back in the olden days, before there were cell phones”.
